Indian Administrative Service IAS (Civil Services): Bachelor Degree in Any Stream in Any Recognized University in India.
Indian Forest Service (IFS): Bachelor Degree as one of the Subject Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science, Botany, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics and Zoology, Agriculture or Equivalent.
At present there are two papers in the Civil Services Preliminary Examination. The first paper is of 'General Studies' while the second paper is called 'Civil Services Aptitude Test' or 'CSAT'. Both the papers of prelims exam are compulsory so to qualify for civil services mains, a candidate has to attempt both the papers. There is also 1/3rd negative marking in the exam.

In this, the second paper CSAT has to be qualified by scoring minimum 33% marks only.
Candidates are allowed to appear for the IAS Mains exam only after successfully qualifying the preliminary exam. IAS Mains exam is a descriptive type paper-based test in which candidates have to write long answers to questions in their own words. UPSC Mains exam consists of 9 papers out of which two are qualifying papers.
The marks of both the qualifying papers are not added for determining the final rank list. Both the papers being 'qualifying' in nature carry 300 marks each. In which the minimum qualification has been fixed at 25% (75 marks). Each question paper for Mains exam will be of 3 hours duration. The question papers (other than Literature of the Language) of the Mains Examination will be set in Hindi and English only. Candidates will have the option to answer all the question papers in any one of the languages included in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution or in English.
